Tamil Nadu: Amma-Chinnamma, Democracy and Politics.
Tyson David, Simon Jude, Sriram Segaran are among few people from Tamil Nadu on my facebook friend list. If I remember correctly then I added them when I was a die hard cricket fan and was admin of various pages, groups and blogs related to cricket(during 2011). So obviously they were cricket fans too. All these cricket fans today wrote over politics. Which made me feel quite high. I am happy that citizen of the nation thinks and speaks up over matters related to state and government, even though he is not politically affiliated to any organisation or individual, even though he is not interested at politics.
It has been almost two months since the then CM of the state J. Jayalalitha died. Of course the whole nation was saddened by her demise. But at the same time it was a sort of new beginning, Unlike other regional giants, Amma had no successor among her family or kins who could take over her reign. People interested at and with knowledge of politics thought that someone from outside the family would take the legacy of Amma and this was certainly like a new hope for a political system with nepotism as its most basic characterstic.
O. Pannerselvam took to the office of chief minister even before the formal announcement of the news.
There was another crucial position that Amma continued to hold till her death. The post of General Secretary of AIADMK. In a day or two, a few names started floating in the political spheres and media. Shashikala Natrajan was one among them.
This was a setback to hopeful Indians. People didn't want nepotism to continue from backdoors. Shashikala, aka Chinamma was a close aide to Amma. She was also accused for having a role in Amma's death by many. However, she was the first choice in party for the highest post and easily reached there.
The politics in state has seen another development today. Shashikala has also taken over the post of chief minister after Pannerselvam's resignation.
I don't know much about politics and political scenario in Tamil Nadu. So even after following the incidents that took place during last two months, I failed to understand why even the most senior an powerful of the leaders bow to a lady who was next to nothing for them. I guess people from Tamil Nadu can better answer this.
But there comes a conclusion again from the whole action. We Indians are said to have Unity in Diversity. We have diverse problems and united we stand to them. No matter which state or region we live in. We face some problem or the other. Similar is the case with political problems. They are distinct but they exist. Kashmir has a problem, different from UP and Tamil Nadu has a problem different from Bihar. But they all have some of it or the other.
I have a generalised view about South India, only a few people there hold all sorts of power. People in media, big business houses, bosses of political parties are all same. Be it Karunanidhi family or any other family. Yet they are democratic provinces !
But the good thing that I am able to see today is that we stand for our problems. Whether we are a cricket fan or a student or a common man busy earning livelihood stand for ourselves ! I know that this doesn't make big difference. But it certainly gives a hope that things will change. Our voice is reaching to their ears too. One day this voice will lead to revolution.. Certainly !
I stand with my brothers of Tamil Nadu who are against this silent, unspoken nepotism !
